Located on the remote and captivating island of Sumba, our retreat is set on the pristine white sands of Dassang Beach, where crystal clear waters meet a coastline that still feels wild and undiscovered. With steady swells rolling in from the Indian Ocean, this stretch of coast is known for some of Indonesia’s best surfing. Surrounded by nature and rooted in ancient culture, the resort sits within a lush 100 hectare coastal reserve on the ancestral lands of the Marapu people.
Here, the experience goes far beyond simply unwinding. You are invited to connect with the island, with yourself, and with traditions that run deep. From days spent in the ocean to horseback rides across untamed landscapes, this is far more than a typical beach escape.
Throughout the week you will practise with one of London’s most respected yoga teachers, Jean Hall. Known for her strong and soulful slow flow, Jean guides two sessions each day that weave together yoga, somatics, breath awareness and meditation. Her teaching offers a spacious, embodied practice that balances strength and softness, movement and stillness, all in harmony with the natural rhythm of the island.
Mornings begin quietly, perhaps watching the sunrise over the ocean before gathering for yoga and a nourishing breakfast. The rest of the day is yours to shape.
For those who enjoy staying active, the ocean offers endless possibilities. Surfers will find uncrowded waves rolling in along the beach in front of the resort, while nearby breaks can be reached by private boat. Beginners can arrange lessons with a local surf school just a short drive away. Bicycles, paddleboards, tennis and volleyball are available for those who wish to move and explore, while massages and wellness treatments can be arranged whenever you feel called to rest.
One of Sumba’s most memorable experiences is swimming with horses, a tradition deeply woven into local culture. Revered by the Sumbanese, horses are far more than companions; they are part of the spiritual fabric of life here. Guided by our local community partners, you will have the chance to connect with these animals and the traditions they represent, whether through a swim in the ocean, a ride along the beach, or simply spending time with them.
During the retreat you will also have the opportunity to explore the island’s cultural heritage. Thoughtfully curated visits to local villages offer insight into ancient practices such as ikat weaving, natural dyeing and traditional crafts, creating meaningful moments of connection with the communities who call this island home.
Midweek we will venture together to Lapopu Waterfall, a dramatic canyon oasis where water from Matayangu cascades into turquoise pools below. It is a beautiful place to swim, wander and enjoy the cool shade of the surrounding forest.
If you are seeking a place where the pace of life slows and the outside world feels far away, come to Sumba with us.
