An Arctic escape by the fjords
Set on the island of Langøya in the far north of the Norwegian Arctic, this five-night retreat takes place in one of Scandinavia’s most remote and beautiful coastal regions. Largely untouched by mass tourism, this is a landscape of dramatic mountains, quiet fishing villages, white sand beaches and deep fjords shaped by the Arctic Ocean and the rhythms of nature.
Our home for the week is a small, family-owned collection of beautifully designed Nordic apartments overlooking the fjord. Set on a quiet stretch of coastline surrounded by mountains and sea, the red timber buildings sit right at the water’s edge, creating the feeling of a secluded Arctic hideaway.
A rhythm of movement and exploration
Most mornings begin with the option of a cold water dip in the fjord before gathering for yoga overlooking the water. After breakfast, we head out to explore the landscapes around us, from coastal trails and mountain hikes to wildlife-rich fjords and remote beaches. Each day offers a different experience, balancing adventure, rest and time to properly absorb the stillness of the north.
Wildlife and wilderness
One of the highlights of the retreat is a wildlife boat safari through the surrounding islands and fjords. Travelling by boat along this rugged coastline, we search for sea eagles and marine life while passing dramatic cliffs, quiet bays and small fishing communities only accessible from the water.
During the retreat, we also head out on two guided hikes. One takes us along the coastline to a remote white sand beach for swimming in Arctic waters, while the other leads higher into the mountains for panoramic views across the islands, fjords and open sea. Packed lunches are included on both days so we can spend more time immersed in the landscape.
The Nordic sauna tradition
Back at our apartments, sauna becomes part of the daily rhythm of the week. After time spent hiking, swimming and exploring, there is something deeply restorative about warming up beside the fjord before stepping back into the cool Arctic air.
Time to slow down
There is also time to enjoy the surroundings at your own pace. You may choose to relax by the water, read in the soft evening light, take an additional cold dip, or join optional activities such as kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding to explore more of the coastline.
Yoga in the Arctic
Throughout the retreat, yoga with Laura Bell provides an anchor to the experience, with energising morning practices and slower evening sessions designed to help the body unwind after the day’s adventures.
A week in Europe’s wild north
Bringing together yoga, hiking, cold water swimming and Nordic sauna culture, this retreat offers a rare opportunity to experience summer in one of Europe’s last true wilderness regions.
