Explore the Mountains of Kyrgyzstan
This ten-night wellness adventure takes us deep into the heart of Kyrgyzstan, a country of soaring mountain ranges, alpine lakes and nomadic traditions that have shaped life here for centuries. Travelling through remote valleys, high mountain passes and vast open landscapes, we’ll experience a side of Central Asia that remains largely untouched by mass tourism.
Our journey begins in the beautiful Chon Kemin Valley, where we’ll settle into mountain life with a gentle hike through the surrounding countryside and our first yoga practices beneath the mountains. The following day, we’ll head deeper into the forests and mountains on a full-day hike, stopping for a picnic lunch surrounded by some of Kyrgyzstan’s most spectacular scenery.
Life at Son Kul Lake
One of the highlights of the retreat is our four-night stay at Son Kul Lake, a vast alpine lake sitting at over 3,000 metres above sea level. Surrounded by rolling grasslands, grazing horses and snow-capped mountains, this is one of the most beautiful and remote regions of Kyrgyzstan.
Our days here are spent immersed in the landscape. Morning and evening yoga sessions frame each day, while hikes take us into the surrounding mountains and along the lakeshore. There is also plenty of time to swim in the clear mountain waters, relax in the traditional steam room and simply enjoy the vast open spaces.
For those who wish to, there are daily opportunities for horse riding with experienced local guides and well-trained horses. Beginners can enjoy gentle rides around the lake and surrounding hills, while more experienced riders can venture further into the mountains and wilderness, climbing high passes and exploring more remote terrain.
During our stay, we’ll also visit a local semi-nomadic family and experience the Nomad Games, offering a fascinating insight into the traditions, hospitality and way of life that continue to shape this region today.
From Son Kul to Tash Bashat
After our time at Son Kul, we leave the high plains behind and travel to Tash Bashat for a night of comfort at a mountain hotel. This gives us a chance to unpack, unwind and enjoy a gentler afternoon after several active days at altitude.
Discover Nomadic Traditions
From Tash Bashat, we continue towards Issyk Kul Lake, stopping along the way to meet master yurt makers. Here, we’ll learn about the craft behind Kyrgyzstan’s traditional nomadic homes and help build a yurt ourselves before continuing to our lakeside eco-camp.
The following day, we’ll meet a Berkutchi, or eagle hunter, whose remarkable skills have been passed down through generations. Watching these magnificent birds and learning about their role in Kyrgyz culture is an experience few travellers ever have the opportunity to witness.
Our overnight stay at Issyk Kul Lake provides a change of pace after the mountains. We’ll spend the afternoon learning the craft of yurt making, enjoy an evening yoga practice and dinner overlooking the lake, before meeting a traditional eagle hunter the following morning.
From Mountain Lakes to Bishkek
Our final days take us from the mountains to Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan’s vibrant capital. We’ll explore wide boulevards, leafy parks, monuments and public squares while learning about the country’s fascinating history and modern identity.
There’ll also be time to visit one of the city’s bustling local markets, where stalls overflow with everything from spices and textiles to local produce and handmade crafts. We round off the adventure with a special farewell dinner, enjoying some of Kyrgyzstan’s finest cuisine as we reflect on the experiences and friendships of the past ten days.
Yoga Woven Into the Adventure
Yoga with James Rafael provides a thread running throughout the journey, with regular morning and evening practices helping us connect more deeply with the landscapes around us. From mountain valleys and lakeshores to life on the high plains of Son Kul, the practices create space to move, reflect and recharge between days of hiking, travel and exploration.
This retreat sits within our Bold Explorer category and is designed for adventurous travellers who enjoy active journeys, spectacular landscapes and discovering cultures that feel very different from their own.
Kyrgyzstan is an extraordinary destination, but it can also be challenging. Throughout the journey, we’ll travel through remote mountain regions, cross high-altitude passes and spend time far from the comforts and conveniences of everyday life. There are several long driving days on rough mountain roads, regular changes of accommodation and plenty of time spent outdoors.
You don’t need previous experience of horse riding, hiking or yoga to join this retreat, and horse riding is entirely optional. However, a good level of fitness, energy and resilience will help you get the most from the experience. Many days are active and involve hiking, travelling or spending extended periods outdoors.
Part of the adventure is our time at Son Kul Lake, which sits at over 3,000 metres above sea level. Most healthy, active people adjust well but it can be challenging the first two days. We slow things down but activities may feel more physically demanding.
Accommodation varies throughout the journey. While some stays offer modern comforts and private facilities, others are much simpler and designed to provide an authentic experience of nomadic life. An open mind, a sense of adventure and a willingness to embrace changing conditions will go a long way.
If you’re excited by high mountain landscapes, life on the nomadic plains and exploring one of the world’s most fascinating mountain regions, this retreat could be for you.

Yoga on our retreats is open to everyone, whether it’s your first class or something you’ve practised for years. Our groups are always a mix, and there’s no pressure to keep up or perform. You’re encouraged to move in a way that feels right for you. Sessions are thoughtfully designed to be grounded and accessible, often becoming a natural way to stretch, slow down, and reconnect after a day outdoors. We work with experienced teachers who know how to support beginners while also helping more regular practitioners deepen their practice, creating a space where people often surprise themselves in the best way
Who is teaching?
Your yoga teacher will be James Rafael, a vinyasa yoga, movement, and meditation teacher who emphasises kind and welcoming practice spaces for all. On this retreat you’ll enjoy flowing, lighthearted practice with an emphasis on breath, integrated strength, flexibility, and loads of options for all levels of experience.
Each class will be 60-90 minutes long combining fluid sequences of postures linked through breath and awareness. There will be a focus on alignment tailored to the individual, with details and personal attention you don’t usually get in regular weekly yoga classes so you can refine and deepen your practice. Philosophy, poetry, and ancient wisdom will be gently offered (without being overbearing!) to truly make this a mind, heart, and body experience.

Mornings
Most mornings begin with a traditional tea or coffee, followed by yoga in peaceful settings surrounded by mountains, lakes or open countryside. These sessions offer an energising start to the day, helping prepare body and mind for the adventures ahead.
After breakfast, we set off for the day’s activities, whether that’s heading into the mountains, visiting local communities or travelling deeper into the remote landscapes of Kyrgyzstan.
Daytime
Days are spent exploring the landscapes, culture and traditions that make Kyrgyzstan so fascinating. Throughout the retreat, we’ll hike through alpine valleys, visit semi-nomadic families, meet eagle hunters and master yurt makers, explore local markets and discover life in the mountains.
Our time at Son Kul Lake includes daily hiking, opportunities for lake swimming, relaxing in the traditional steam room and optional horse riding with experienced local guides. Depending on your experience level, rides range from gentle outings around the lake to longer journeys into the surrounding mountains.
Picnic lunches are included on some days, allowing us to spend longer immersed in the landscape without needing to return to camp.
Evenings
As the day draws to a close, we gather again for a more relaxed yoga practice designed to help the body unwind after hiking, travelling and exploring.
Dinner is a chance to come together, share stories from the day and enjoy local hospitality. Some evenings are spent in comfortable hotels, while others are spent beneath endless mountain skies in traditional yurt camps, offering a rare opportunity to disconnect from daily life and experience a different way of living.
Each day combines yoga, nature, culture and adventure, creating an immersive journey through one of Central Asia’s most remarkable destinations.

Chon Kemin Valley (2 nights | Premium)
Our first two nights are spent in spacious, beautifully appointed yurts set amongst the mountains of Chon Kemin Valley. Combining traditional nomadic design with modern comforts, these yurts feature comfortable beds, heating and private bathrooms. Surrounded by rolling hills and mountain scenery, it’s the perfect place to settle into the adventure.

We’ll stay in authentic yurts furnished with colourful handmade carpets, comfortable beds and wood-burning stoves. Facilities are simple, with shared hot showers, toilets and a traditional steam room. What these yurts lack in luxury, they more than make up for in atmosphere, offering an unforgettable opportunity to experience life on the high mountain plains.
Tash Bashat (1 night | Comfort)
Our mountain hotel stay offers a welcome opportunity to relax and recharge after our time at Son Kul. Rooms are comfortable and well-equipped, with private bathrooms and views across the surrounding countryside.

Bishkek (2 nights | Comfort)
Our final two nights are spent in a comfortable spa hotel in Bishkek, offering modern facilities and a chance to unwind before the journey home. It’s the perfect place to reflect on the adventure and enjoy a little extra comfort after our time in the mountains.

Expect hearty, home-cooked dishes designed to fuel days spent hiking, exploring and travelling through the mountains. Fresh salads, seasonal vegetables, soups, breads, rice and noodle dishes all feature regularly, alongside local specialities that offer an insight into Kyrgyz culture and hospitality.
On some days, picnic lunches are included so we can spend more time out in nature and less time travelling back and forth.
If you have dietary requirements, please speak to our team before booking. Vegetarian diets can usually be accommodated, but vegan, coeliac and more complex dietary requirements may be challenging in some of the remote areas we visit. We’ll always do our best to help, but it’s important to understand that options can be more limited than on some of our other retreats.

This retreat is likely to appeal to adventurous travellers who enjoy spending time outdoors, learning about different cultures and experiencing destinations beyond the usual tourist trail.
Do I need horse-riding experience?
No. Horse riding is entirely optional and suitable opportunities are available for both beginners and more experienced riders.
If horse riding isn’t for you, there will be alternative ways to enjoy the landscapes around Son Kul Lake, including hiking, swimming, relaxing in the steam room or simply enjoying the scenery.
Will I be affected by the altitude?
Son Kul Lake sits at over 3,000 metres above sea level. Most guests adjust well, but some people may notice the effects of altitude, particularly during the first day or two.
The itinerary is designed to allow time to acclimatise, and we encourage guests to stay hydrated, take things at their own pace and listen to their bodies.
What are the yurts like?
Throughout the retreat, we’ll stay in a variety of accommodation styles. In Chon Kemin Valley, you’ll enjoy spacious yurts with modern comforts, including private bathrooms. At Son Kul Lake, the experience is more traditional, with beautifully decorated yurts, comfortable beds and wood-burning stoves.
Facilities at Son Kul are simple, with shared hot showers, toilets and a traditional steam room. The accommodation is comfortable, but the focus here is very much on the extraordinary setting and experience of nomadic life.
Can I book on my own?
Yes, absolutely. Many guests join our retreats solo. This is a wonderful way to explore Kyrgyzstan while sharing the adventure with a small group of like-minded travellers.
Can you cater for my dietary requirements?
Please speak to our team before booking if you have dietary requirements. Vegetarian diets can usually be accommodated, but vegan, coeliac and more complex dietary requirements may be challenging in some of the remote areas we visit.
We’ll always do our best to help, but it’s important to understand that options can be more limited than on some of our other retreats.
Do I need any vaccinations or visas?
Please check here for vaccination information. Please check here for visa information.
Who is hosting this trip?
This retreat is hosted by Jools Sampson, founder of Reclaim Yourself Retreats, who will look after the group throughout the journey, alongside James Rafael, who teaches the yoga sessions.
We’ll also be accompanied by an experienced local guide, a team of skilled drivers and the wonderful camp owners and hosts who welcome us along the way. Together, they’ll help bring Kyrgyzstan’s landscapes, culture and traditions to life while ensuring everything runs smoothly behind the scenes.
We believe in good tourism, travel that’s genuinely good for everyone involved: the people who come with us, the communities we visit, and the places we pass through.
In practice, that means measuring our emissions and working to reduce them, choosing locally owned partners, and seeking out destinations that are less visited and more meaningful. It shows up in every decision we make, from where we go to who we work with.
Our partners are two dynamic young women who have created a brilliant travel company in Kyrgyzstan.
Measuring impact
Before we work with any host, we ask them to share honestly where they are on their sustainability journey — not as a test, but as a commitment to doing things better together. Our Kyrgyzstan assessment is coming soon.
